Creating a ZiLink Homework

ZiLink Homework is a Moodle Activity and added just like any other Moodle Activity.

Login to Moodle, navigate to your course, click 'Turn editing on', click 'Add an activity or resource' in the section where you want to add the ZiLink Homework.

  1. Select  'ZiLink - Homework'.
  2. Click 'Add'.

  1. Enter a title for your homework.
  2. Explain your homework and what you want your learners to do.
  3. If you want to apply this homework to a particular grouping you can do so here. Later in the configuration you will find a greater depth of restriction than just a particular grouping.

The remaining sections to use are:

  • Notifications;
  • Grade;
  • Automatically Populate Homework;
  • Activity completion
  • Restrict access.

These sections are explained further below. They do not have to be used but add to the flexibility of ZiLink Homework.

Notifications

When a homework is complete, a notification email can be sent: to the student who completed it, to all the teachers on the course or to both.

An administrator can control who receives this email using the capability 'mod:zilinkhomework/emailoncomplete' - by default all teachers and non-editing teachers have this capability.

Grade

Grade

This is the maximum grade that can be achieved with this homework activity. Do not confuse this with a grade associated with, for example, an assignment within the Homework Activity. The grade in this section can be applied to a very simple homework activity that does include another Moodle Activity. In most case you can leave this as a default.

Automatically Populate Homework

This will automatically add a list of all the resources and activities in the current course into the ZiLink Homework.

This list will be updated with any changes in the course, whenever you visit the 'Edit' page for the ZiLink Homework.

Items can be hidden from the list, by clicking on the 'hide' icon beside them.

To remove the automatic items from the list, change this option back to 'No', then click on 'Remove course module items' on the 'Edit' page.

Activity completion

Completion tracking - If enabled, activity completion is tracked, either manually or automatically, based on certain conditions. Multiple conditions may be set if desired. If so, the activity will only be considered complete when ALL conditions are met.

A tick next to the activity name on the course page indicates when the activity is complete.

Require grade - If enabled, the activity is considered complete when a student receives a grade. Pass and fail icons may be displayed if a pass grade for the activity has been set.

Require checked-off - For the Homework Activity to be considered completed, you can set a threshold. Normally, you will leave this at the default 100.

Expect completed by - This setting specifies the date when the activity is expected to be completed. The date is not shown to students and is only displayed in the activity completion report. Usually, you might depend upon another included activity to supply a 'completion date' such as an assignment submission date.

You can also choose to restrict access to the homework by a variety of different criteria and be quite sophisticated about access to the homework. Plus, you can apply more than one restriction.

For example, you could require students to complete a particular activity first (Activity completion option) and if that condition is met the Homework will open on or after a particular date (Date option). You can even create a set of restrictions through 'Restriction set'.

To add resources and activities to your Homework Activity, click 'Save and display'.

You can add a line of text, change dates and import additional files through drag-and-drop.

You can choose to automatically add items from the current section or the whole course (see above).

In this example, we have automatically added items from the current section. However, we not wish to include all items and if this is the case we can edit the list.

  1. Click this eye and the all items are hidden from view. Also, this is the 'title' for the course section so if you hide the course section, you're hiding all the contents of that section.
  2. To remove an item from the list, click the 'eye' to hide the item.
  3. To add a line of text, such as instruction, click the green coloured plus sign.
  4. To import a file click 'Import items'.
  5. You can also add another line of text if you wish.

If you don't want to include the Section title, you can hide the section title and unhide those items you want to include in the homework.

In this example I have hidden the Section title and unhidden two items.

The ZiLink Homework is complete and subject to your settings is available to your learners.
